The Seven Deadly Sins「七つの大罪, Nanatsu no Taizai」 is the 1st episode of The Seven Deadly Sins anime series. Summary The third princess of the Kingdom of Liones, Elizabeth, finds Meliodas, who is the owner of the Boar Hat bar and is also one of the Seven Deadly Sins. With her identity revealed, she is pursued by Twigo whom Meliodas easily defeats. The princess joins him on his journey to find the other Deadly Sins in order to defeat the Holy Knights, who have orchestrated a coup d'état and have overthrown the king. Plot Outside of Liones, Alioni, a young squire, walks through a desecrated residential area with an older knight. They stop at the site of a bloody battle, where dozens of Holy Knights lay dead. The knight explains that all of them were killed in the blink of an eye by only seven people. Ten years later, near Kaynes Village, a figure clad in full suit of armor shambles across the fields. Nearby, at the Boar Hat bar, many patrons visit for drinks and food, though the bar’s owner says that they have a reputation for good booze and terrible food. A man bursts into the bar and states that he saw the infamous Rust Knight. One bar patron says that the Rust Knight is just a made-up story to scare kids into behaving. He points out the wanted posters and explains that the Seven Deadly Sins had massacred Holy Knights, including the Grand Master, 10 years ago. Loud creaking noises stop conversations in the bar, and Hawk, a talking pig, says he can smell rust. The door swings open, and a large armored figure shambles in, causing the patrons to evacuate. The figure falls backward, revealing an unconscious young woman. The owner brings her back to his room and “checks” to make sure that she’s a woman, much to the frustration of Hawk. When she wakes up, she asks what happened and where she is. He replies that she suddenly passed out in his bar. He makes food for her, and she agrees that the food is awful, but still says it’s delicious as she begins to cry. She explains that she’s looking for the Sins. Outside, Alioni and the knights of Beard of the Mountain Cat demand entry so that they can arrest the Rust Knight. Alioni recounts his experiences at the uprising 10 years ago, telling them not to underestimate the Sins. His team doesn’t believe him. The knights shout at the bar again for the Rust Knight to come out, and Hawk comes over dressed up with pieces of armor. Alioni shouts at the owner, frustrated with the turn of events while the woman tries to sneak out of the bar. One of the knights notices her, and Alioni calls for them to inform Twigo. The knights chase her through the forest, and Alioni muses that he can finally be an apprentice Holy Knight if he catches her. However, Hawk bolts in and knocks out all of them. The owner asks why she’s looking for the Sins, and she replies that she’s trying to stop the Holy Knights. Hawk questions this, saying that the Holy Knights are heroes who protect Liones. However, the woman reveals that King Bartra is not actually sick and that the Holy Knights have commenced a coup d'état to start a war. Though she knows they’re considered criminals, the Sins are her only hope in stopping the Holy Knights. Suddenly, Twigo cuts the ground below them, causing them to fall down the cliff. He tells the rest of the knights to write up a report about the casualties, but the owner lands safely in front of them with Hawk, Alioni, and the woman in tow. Twigo recognizes the woman’s earring as a mark of the royal family, concluding that she is Elizabeth, the third princess of Liones. Elizabeth, Hawk, and the owner flee into the forest. Hoping to “accidentally” kill her, Twigo cuts through the entire forest, causing hundreds of trees to fall. The owner shields her from the impact with his body. However, Elizabeth then walks toward Twigo to give herself up in the hopes that a kind stranger would not be killed because of her. After protecting her again, he introduces himself as Meliodas. Alioni wakes up looking for Meliodas, but a knight reassures him that Twigo can handle himself. Yet Alioni says they should be worried as he had recognized Meliodas’ dragon tattoo. Twigo attacks Meliodas from behind, but instead, Twigo is the one who gets hurt. As Meliodas stands, Twigo recognizes him and asks how he looks exactly the same. Twigo attacks again but does no damage. Meliodas counterattacks with his broken blade and causes the area to explode in a cloud of smoke and Twigo to shoot off into the distance. He smirks, reintroducing himself as Meliodas, the Dragon's Sin of Wrath who leaded the Seven Deadly Sins. After resheathing his sword, Meliodas explains to Elizabeth that he runs the bar to gather intel. He asks if she’ll come with them, which she immediately agrees to. Twigo, surrounded by knights in a crater, tells them to call for reinforcements, but Hawk’s mom emerges to pick up Meliodas and Elizabeth. At Fort Solgales, a Holy Knight expresses his hopes that Twigo’s report on seeing one of the Seven Deadly Sins is real this time. Grant Gustin delivers one of his funniest performances to date in the season 7 premiere of The Flash. We Are The Flash After six seasons of The Flash, the line "Run, Barry, Run" shouldn't work. We've heard it, and variations on it, enough times that it should feel old and not resonate emotionally like it did in the early days. But man, that's far from the case, as evidenced by the season 7 premiere, in which Tom Cavanagh, as always, poignantly delivers that iconic phrase. "All's Wells That Ends Wells," The Flash's season opener, is a weird beast, as is to be excepted. Technically, this episode was supposed to be the 20th episode of season 6, but, you know, the pandemic happened. So, this episode is a mix of stuff that was shot before the lockdown and some new material to make it feel like an exciting start of a new season. And you can definitely feel the Frankenstein's monster-like aspect of the hour at times, especially at the beginning of the episode. Nevertheless, that didn't stop me from enjoying it, for the most part, especially Cavanagh and Grant Gustin's excellent performances. When the season begins, Barry's speed is down to one percent, and he keeps trying and failing to catch Eva McCulloch, who is zooming around Central City via mirrors and causing all kinds of mischief. Nash and the Council of Wells in his brain come up with a way to power the Artificial Speed Force transferring the multiversal particles in Nash's bodies, courtesy of all the Wellses, into the Fusion Sphere. The problem is, though, multiversal particles are unstable and need an organic conduit to work with the sphere, Nash needs to die in order for this plan to work. The science mumbo-jumbo is on another level in this episode. But Nash isn't ready to die and storms off to figure out another way for this to work. The Flash Tom Cavanagh as Nash Wells on 'The Flash' Credit Katie Yu/The CW In the end, Nash asks Allegra to use her powers to push the multiversal particles out of his body and into the sphere and stabilize them at the same time. Despite Chester's concerns, they test this out — and of course, the plan goes awry and Barry gets hit by a blast of multiversal particles. When Barry comes to, Allegra, Nash, and Chester realize that all of the Wellses are now in Barry's brain. This leads to one of Grant Gustin's finest and funniest performances on the show to date because he has to break out impressions of Harry Wells, Wells, and Sherloque Wells. And Gustin does each character perfectly, from the somehow still funny bit about Sherloque's name to how annoying can be. Gustin gets a lot of praise for his dramatic chops, which The Flash calls on quite often, but it's easy to forget just how funny he is. As a side note, showrunner Eric Wallace and the writers have done a good job of giving both Gustin and Candice Patton material that pushes them out of their comfort zone and reminds us how great they are as actors. Barry cycling through the multiple Wells personalities stops being, fun, however, once they realize that his speed healing, which is slowly going away, is the only reason he hasn't died from having all of those competing brainwaves in his head. So, Chester gets to work building something that will draw the multiversal particles back into Nash when Allegra blasts him with his powers again. While that's happening, Nash — whose embarrassed for lying to the team about needing an organic conduit — has a touching heart-to-heart with Harry Wells, who reminds Nash that he's just like every other Wells that's visited Team Flash He arrived a broken man, but Team Flash helped show him he could be better. Personally, I like the show's interpretation of what's happened to each Wells that's joined the team, even if it's cheesy in a "you thought I was teaching you? No, you were teaching me" kinda way. Anyway, once Chester finishes the device, Allegra transfers the particles back into Nash's body. Unfortunately, they need to find a way to power the ASF asap because Eva McCulloch is about to blow up a Black Hole plane above Central City, the debris from which will kill many people. Nash, taking Harry's words to heart, does the valiant thing and sacrifices himself to power the ASF, despite Barry pleading with him not to do it. As I mentioned above, Nash and all of the Wellses goodbyes were really touching, especially Harry's, who has the honor of saying, "Run, Barry, Run" — which is exactly what Barry does once the ASF powers on and restores Barry's speed, allowing him to save the day in a pretty cool looking action sequence. Even though I know Cavanagh is still part of the show, his death scene was pretty heart-wrenching. Elsewhere in the episode Iris is still trapped in the Mirrorverse and is being tormented by past versions of herself, specifically pilot Iris, season 3 Iris, and Old Lady Iris from the future, all of whom play on Iris' self-doubt. At first, Iris thinks this is the result of neural dissonance, but then she somehow realizes Eva is behind it because she's trying to convince her there's no way of escaping the Mirrorverse… or something. While the script definitely gave Patton some interesting moods to play, this part of the story left me more confused than anything else. I wonder if that's a result of the Frankenstein's monster nature of this episode. Overall, I thought this was a solid start to the season, given everything working against the show. Gustin's comedic performance was definitely a highlight; however, I also enjoyed seeing Barry just work with Team Flash's newbies, and both Brandon McKnight and Kayla Compton made good use of their time in the sunshine. While I didn't spend too much time on it, seeing Cecile learn how to use her powers in a new way was also cool. B Wall of Weird In the episode-ending stinger, Eva discovers that she's not the real Eva. The real one died on the night of the particle accelerator explosion, and the one roaming about now is simply a Mirror of Mirror copies Eva reveals that original Mirror Master Sam Scudder was her first Mirror creation, which is a random retcon, but I'm not mad at the beginning of the episode, Chester is reading a book and says, "What if the universe is just some cosmic neural network?" I wonder if that line is hinting at how Wells/Cavanagh will remain part of the show. Warning The following contains major spoilers for the For All Mankind Season 2 finale. Proceed at your own risk! A major crisis was averted in For All Mankinds Season 2 finale by the heroic sacrifice of not one but two astronauts. With the rest of Jamestown’s crew being held hostage by the Russians, it was up to exes Gordo and Tracy to stop a nuclear meltdown from destroying the base and making the moon uninhabitable for thousands of years. But doing so required the pair to venture outside on the lunar surface without proper space suits, which ultimately led to their tragic deaths after an incredibly intense save. Below, executive producer Ronald D. Moore reveals why Gordo and Tracy both had to die and previews what the significant loss means for Season 3 which, as teased in the finale, will jump ahead to a human being on Mars in 1994. The EP also weighs in on the Baldwins’ marriage and the surprise reveal that Margo is unintentionally working for the Russians. TVLINE When did you make the decision to kill off Gordo and Tracy? It was relatively late in the game. We were working on the last few episodes, and shooting was already underway. We had set the puzzle pieces in place — the nuclear meltdown on the moon, Apollo-Soyuz and Pathfinder all being the three main events — and we started talking seriously about Gordo or Tracy going out and making the run, and then somebody in the room said, “One of them could die when that happens.” We all sort of shied away from that. It’s like, “No, no, no, I don’t want to kill the character,” and the conversation continued, and then somebody else said, “Or they could both do it, and they could both die,” and then we really recoiled away from that. We were like, “No, we love those characters and the actors, and I don’t want to do that.” But as time went on and we kept talking about the story, we just kept coming back to it. It was like a gravitational pull, and at a certain point, you start listening to that as writers and going, “There’s a reason we keep talking about it,” and we started to seriously talk about it and game it out and talk about the pros and cons, and what really became clear to us was it was the right ending for their story. Looking at the overall story of Gordo and Tracy from the beginning of the series and their marriage, the way they met, Tracy’s opportunity to become an astronaut, the way it affects Gordo’s career… They split up between the seasons, and then in this season, you see them on very different paths, but slowly, both of them going to the moon and both of them gradually learning and moving back towards each other. The right ending was the two of them together to sacrifice themselves and save the world, and that felt like that was the best possible ending to their tale, and so we just decided to embrace it. TVLINE There was never a scenario in play where Tracy lived and only Gordo died? Well, we did talk about it. We talked about both versions. We talked about a version where Gordo died, we talked about a version where Tracy died, but we weren’t satisfied with either version. We decided not to do either of those, and the version where they both died was the only really viable one. TVLINE The way that they die is so brutal. How did you land on that specific type of death for them? The idea of running across the moon without a suit on was something I pitched to the room as just an idea, because I’ve always been fascinated with the notion that you can live for a brief period of time in a vacuum, even though a lot of science fiction posits [that] as soon as you are exposed to the vacuum, your head explodes or something, and that’s not actually true. The sequence in 2001 A Space Odyessy where Keir Dullea goes outside the spacecraft without his helmet on and survives was always something that affected me as a kid. I was like, “Whoa, that’s crazy, you can do that.” So that notion was always in the back of my mind in terms of a cool science fiction beat to play. But if we’re going to do it on our show, we take the science so seriously. How would it really work, and how would they do it? And then someone in research came up with the notion of the duct tape suits, that they should try to do something to construct some kind of suit for themselves for the heat and for pressure, to keep their skin from just literally billowing out and bursting, and that was the only way that they could possibly do it. So we just tried to listen to everybody and tried to construct the scenario so that it was as plausible as possible. TVLINE How did the actors, Sarah Jones and Michael Dorman, react to their death scenes? They were shocked when we told them. It wasn’t something, I think, anyone saw coming. It’s hard to say that to an actor, that we’ve decided to kill your character, and here is why. But when we explained the reasoning to it and said, “Here’s why we are doing it, and what it means,” they both were on board, and they were both like, “I get it.” They were sort of heartsick at leaving the show, and we were heartsick at letting them go, but I think they understood that it was all done for the betterment of the story and the characters, and it wasn’t that we didn’t love Sarah and Michael, because we adored Sarah and Michael, and they adored being on the show. But it was just everyone recognized that this was the best ending. TVLINE It does close their storyline, but what does it open up for you in terms of storytelling potential looking ahead at the next season? It opens up a lot of things. One of the unique aspects of the show is that this is a generational show. It moves through the decades. So people are going to come and go. Some people are going to die, some people are going to move out of the story, younger people are going to grow up. Gordo and Tracy’s kids are young adults in Season 2. Well, they’re going to be real adults in Season 3. So they’re moving into that space as well. And now you also have Ed and Karen and their relationships with the two boys, which are very different, obviously, and the stories that that opens up in the gap of the parents being gone, and how does that affect those two boys, and how does that affect the people that knew and loved them? So there’s a lot of fertile ground to continue to play. TVLINE As you’re skipping ahead 10 years, given the time jump, will you need to recast the character of Kelly with an older actress? We take that decision a season at a time. We’re not recasting Kelly for Season 3, and the same goes for Danny and Jimmy, but we’ll see as we go forward. It’s kind of an open question. You kind of have to wrestle with ideas of makeup versus recasting, but we haven’t made those decisions yet. TVLINE The Russians have been using Margo. So are Sergei’s feelings for Margo real at all? It seemed that they had a connection. I believe Sergei’s feelings for Margo are real. I think Sergei’s in a difficult position, certainly. TVLINE Is Sergei also being manipulated by the Russians? I think that’s a fair way to look at it. He’s not part of the KGB. He is a scientist. He is running their version of the space program in Star City. You saw how the military influence in NASA impacted Margo’s job. She had difficulty in dealing with the Pentagon. Sergei has his own trouble dealing with the KGB and the Soviet military. So he’s not embedded in their intelligence service, but certainly, he was used by it. TVLINE Is there any significance to Margo standing in front of JFK’s grave and the eternal flame at the end of the finale? Sure, it was his vision that set the United States on the path to the moon, even though in our version of history, the Russians beat them there. He was, just like in real history, a hugely influential, hugely inspirational figure to people like Margo Madison, and the eternal flame burns for a lot of different symbolic reasons to someone like Margo Madison. TVLINE The end of the finale also leaves things quite open-ended with regards to Karen and Ed’s marriage. They come and leave in separate cars from the funeral. What would you say is the state of their marriage at this point? Not in a good place. TVLINE Is there hope for them? I think there’s always hope. We’ll see. I don’t think it’s a done deal by any means that it’s really over. They’re connected intimately in each other’s lives and probably always will be. The question is Where do they go from here?
